The Mastercard Foundation is delighted to announce as well as invite intellectual African students who wish to further their education in Ethiopia to partake in the on going Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program 2023. This program is open to suitable candidates who wish to continue their Undergraduate and Postgraduate studies.
This Tuition award program is open to Undergraduate and Postgraduate students. This scholarship scheme is a fully funded opportunity that covers the tuition fee and general expenses. This program is hosted by University of Gondar, Ethiopia and sponsored by Mastercard Foundation. The Mastercard scholarship seeks to provide funding for students from East African countries who intend to enroll in a full-time undergraduate and postgraduate programs at the University of Gondar.
The Mastercard Foundation is an international non-governmental organization established by Mastercard in 2006. The organization, which is based in Toronto, Ontario, has supported work in 49 countries. In 2018, Mastercard Foundation shifted to a specific focus on Africa, through its Young Africa Works strategy. The foundation develops programs primarily focused on reducing gender and economic inequality, expanding access to quality education, increasing the opportunities for decent work, and supporting overall economic growth. Funding is primarily managed with bilateral allocations through post-secondary institutions, research institutes, non-governmental organizations and the private sector, plus multilateral allocations through organizations like the numerous United Nations entities under the United Nations Sustainable Development Group.
The University of Gondar, until 2003 known as the Gondar College of Medical Sciences, is the oldest medical school in Ethiopia. Established as the Public Health College in 1954, it is located in Gondar, in Amhara Region of Ethiopia. In 2010, the university offered 42 undergraduate and 17 postgraduate programs. As of 2016, the university offers 56 undergraduate and 64 postgraduate. These are organized under the College of Medicine and Health Sciences, College of Business and Economics, College of Natural and Computational Sciences, College of Social Sciences and Humanities, and Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Faculty of Agriculture, and three schools (School of Law, School of Technology and School of Education). The current president of the university is Dr. Asrat Atsedeweyn.

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program has two categories including the undergraduate and graduate scholars program. The Undergraduate Scholars Program is a collaborative program involving Mastercard Foundation and the University of Gondar to create scholarship opportunities for Ethiopian youth to pursue undergraduate studies at the University of Gondar. The scholarships cover the academic and non-academic costs of scholars while they pursue their studies in various fields of studies.
The Graduate Scholars Program is designed to help Scholars to acquire transformational and leadership skills and demonstrate high professional and scholarly competencies to effectively influence global, regional, national and local socioeconomic development trends. The Program is technically and financially supported by Mastercard Foundation and will avail excellent academic and non-academic support to Scholars during their stay at University of Gondar.

Requirement and Eligibility Criteria for Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program 2023:
- Applicants for the master’s scholarship must be from the eligible East African countries (Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea, Djibouti and South Sudan) enrolled in a full-time program at the University.
- Applicants for the undergraduate scholarship must be Ethiopian youths studying at the University.
- Applicants must be enrolled in the eligible courses for the different categories of scholarships.

Online applications must be completed by interested candidates for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program. While master’s applicants must complete their applications through the master’s application portal, undergraduate applicants can do so through the undergraduate application portal.
