United Nations/Japan Long-Term Fellowship 2024

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates from developing countries for the United Nations/Japan Long-term Fellowship 2024/2025 session. This program is open to postgraduate candidates.

This fellowship program is an opportunity offered to qualified postgraduate candidates from developing countries. This program is sponsored by United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs, Government of Japan and hosted by Kyushu Institute of Technology (Kyutech). The Program will provide extensive research opportunities in nano-satellite systems through the use of the nano-satellite development and testing facilities available at Kyutech.

The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) is an office of the U.N. Secretariat that promotes and facilitates peaceful international cooperation in outer space. It works to establish or strengthen the legal and regulatory frameworks for space activities, and assists developing countries in using space science and technology for sustainable socioeconomic development. The Office was established in 1958 to assist and advise the ad hoc Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS), which was established by the UN General Assembly to discuss the scientific and legal aspects of exploring and using outer space to benefit humankind. The Committee became permanent the following year, with UNOOSA undergoing several structural changes before its relocation in 1993 to the United Nations Office in Vienna, Austria.

Kyushu Institute of Technology is one of the 87 national universities in Japan. Located in Fukuoka Prefecture on the island of Kyushu, it is dedicated to education and research in the fields of science and technology. It is earlier abbreviated to KIT and is now officially abbreviated to Kyutech. The founder was Matsumoto Kenjiro, second son of Yasukawa Keiichiro, and the links with the Yaskawa Electric Corporation (founded in 1915) remain strong to this day. The centenary of the opening of the Tobata campus is being celebrated in 2009, with Founder’s Day on May 28, 2009. One of its famous alumnus is “Mr. Tornado”, the severe storms researcher Tetsuya “Ted” Fujita. He graduated in 1943 and was an associate professor until 1953 when he was invited to the University of Chicago.

Requirement and Eligibility Criteria for United Nations/Japan Long-Term Fellowship 2024:

Be nationals of developing countries or non-space-faring nations (countries without an established substantial capability to develop space technology/launch space objects);
Be duly nominated by their institutions;
Born on or after 2 April 1987;
Should have the academic and professional background required by the specific fellowship program.
Candidates seeking a Master degree are expected to have completed studies ending with a Bachelor Degree or equivalent (4 year university degree) in engineering-related subjects.
Candidates seeking a Doctorate degree are expected to have completed studies ending with a Master Degree or equivalent (5 years university degree) in engineering-related subjects. Degrees in different technological fields can be considered by the Doctor Commission; and
Be able to make professional use of the experience gained in the fellowship program.
