CARTA PhD Fellowships 2025 for African Researchers
Applications are now open for the esteemed PhD Fellowships offered by the Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA) for the year 2025. The existence of CARTA is the coming together of efforts between eight African universities, four African research institutes, and eight international partners.
CARTA’s is to support PhD students who are eager and passionate about public and population health. The sole mission is to help African universities overcome obstacles and heavy barriers in training and keeping talented scholars. By doing so they decided to come together and be innovative, CARTA aims to solve important problems and groom a fresh batch of academic leaders in Africa.
The Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA) is a collaborative initiative aimed at addressing the challenges faced by African higher education institutions in training and retaining the next generation of academic leaders. CARTA emphasizes capacity-building efforts in public and population health through innovative doctoral training programs.

Requirements and eligibility criteria for CARTA PhD Fellowships 2025:
- Hold a Master’s degree in a relevant field.
- Admission into a PhD program is not required for application, but awards are contingent upon obtaining admission at one of the participating African universities.
- Applicants must be full-time teaching or research staff at one of the participating African institutions and committed to capacity-building efforts.
- The Ph.D. research proposal must focus on public and population health.
- Fellowships are open to individuals not yet registered for a Ph.D. or in the early stages (first year) of the program without a defined research proposal.
- Commitment to participation in all four annual residential Joint Advanced Seminars (JASes) and engagement in inter-seminar activities.
- Male applicants must be under 40 years old, and female applicants under 45 years old.

Application Procedure (How to apply);
To apply for CARTA PhD Fellowships, follow these steps:
- Contact the CARTA focal person at your institution to express your interest and obtain application materials. You can also download the application forms from the provided link.
- Submit your completed application forms and reference letters to the Focal Persons at partner institutions, along with a copy to the Secretariat (carta@aphrc.org) by April 15, 2024.
- CARTA partner institutions will nominate candidates for the full application process. The institutional selection will occur between April 15 and May 15, 2024. Institutions must submit a completed University CARTA PhD Fellowships Applications Screening Form by May 15, 2025.
Only nominees will be invited to submit a full application between June 1 and July 15, 2024.
The full application includes:
- A detailed research proposal
- Updated CV
- Letter of support from your institution, confirming commitment to adjust workloads for fellows and waive fees if registered at the institution of employment.
- Applications must be submitted through the official portal within the specified timeframe. Ensure timely submission and completeness of your application, as late or incomplete submissions will not be considered.
