The Africa Excellence Scholarship is now taking applications from interested and qualified students at the University of Newcastle. For the academic year 2023/2024, this scholarship is open to African students with good academic credentials who intend to enroll in the university’s undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs.

This scholarship is partially funded and an offer of AU$10,000 for each year of study is given to qualified Undergraduates & Postgraduates student. This program is hosted and sponsored by University of Newcastle, Australia. To draw talented overseas students to the University of Newcastle, the Africa Excellence Scholarship was created. This merit-based award rewards candidates with good academic records and encourages them to keep pushing themselves to become the best version of themselves.

The University of Newcastle is a public university in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. Established in 1965, it has a primary campus in the Newcastle suburb of Callaghan. The university also operates campuses in Central Coast, Singapore, Newcastle City and Sydney CBD. Historically, the University of Newcastle Medical School has implemented the problem-based learning system for its undergraduate Bachelor of Medicine program – a system later mandated for use by the Australian Medical Council throughout Australia. It pioneered use of the Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test (UMAT) in the early 1990s. UMAT has since been accepted widely by different medical schools across Australia as an additional selection criteria. The University of Newcastle is a member of the Australian Technology Network, Universities Australia and the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

The Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit. About 100 slots are available for the year 2023. All academic merit determinations are determined according to the University’s procedures for determining ATAR and GPA

Students who do not receive an offer of the scholarship will not be eligible for the scholarship. Internal transfer students who are studying at an Australian or Online campus and were not previously awarded the scholarship will also not be eligible.

Students studying quota-limited programs will not be eligible for this scholarship (please view full terms and conditions for the list of quota-limited programs which will not be eligible)

Requirement and Eligibility Criteria for Africa Excellence Scholarship 2023:

  • Applicants must hold a passport from one of the 54 countries of Africa.
  • Applicants must be commencing study in an eligible undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree program at the University (excluding ELICOS, Enabling, Non-Award, Higher Degrees by Research programs and programs delivered at offshore campuses).
  • Applicants must be an International full-fee paying student.
  • Applicants must be commencing in an eligible program at an Australian or Online campus as indicated in your Letter of Offer.
  • Applicants must not be the beneficiary of a separate University scholarship unless prior approval for special dispensation has been obtained from the university.
  • Applicants must meet all of the financial obligations of a full-fee paying international student, including the full tuition fee and other expenses for the purpose of obtaining your student visa, and in the event that eligibility for the scholarship is not maintained.

Application Procedures for the 2023/2024 Africa Excellence Scholarship (how to apply):

Students who have been offered a place in a qualifying, non-quota program and who will start their studies at the University of Newcastle will automatically be given the Scholarships.

The value of the scholarship will be disclosed to successful candidates along with their Letter of Offer, and they should carefully consider all of the terms and conditions before deciding whether or not to accept.
