Applications are hereby invited from high potential and excellent candidates to apply for Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) Prize Scholarship 2024  academic year. This opportunity is available to applicants who intend to pursue their Masters and PhD degree in South Africa.

This scholarship program is a partially funded opportunity that provides R180,000 per year at Master level, and R190,000 per year at PhD level and other expenses to qualified students. This scholarship is hosted by South African Universities and sponsored by South African Astronomical observatory (SAAO).

South African Astronomical Observatory is the national center for optical and infrared astronomy in South Africa. It was established in 1972. The observatory is run by the National Research Foundation of South Africa. The facility’s function is to conduct research in astronomy and astrophysics. The primary telescopes are located in Sutherland, which is 370 kilometers (230 mi) from Observatory, Cape Town, where the headquarters is located. The SAAO has links worldwide for scientific and technological collaboration. Instrumental contributions from the South African Astronomical Observatory include the development of a spherical aberration corrector and the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT). The Noon Gun on Cape Town’s Signal Hill is fired remotely by a time signal from the Observatory.

Requirement and Eligibility Criteria for Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) Prize Scholarship 2024:

  • The SALT-SAAO scholarships are open to candidates of any nationality, but preference will be given to South African citizens and permanent residents.
  • Applicants must be eligible to register for a Masters/PhD degree in astrophysics at a South African university at the start of the 2024 academic year. Ideal candidates will have a background in astrophysics.

Selection Criteria:

  • The selection criteria will be academic merit, motivation, aptitude for research, transformation considerations, and the results of an interview.

The subject line of your email should contain your surname, the surname of the supervisor of the project you are applying for, and the level (Masters or PhD) at which you are applying. Also arrange to have two referees send a reference letter directly to scholarship@saao.ac.za, by the application deadline, and with your name in the subject line.
